"Secondary school" is changing in Kenya. Under Competency-Based Education, secondary schools are converting into Senior Schools — the first Grade 10 cohort joined in January 2026, placed through the Ministry of Education's national selection system into one of three pathways: STEM, Social Sciences, or Arts & Sports Science.
At the same time, the final 8-4-4 classes are still in school working toward KCSE, and international schools continue with IGCSE. For the next few years, most schools must run two or three systems of assessment and reporting at once.

It is changing. Under the 2-6-3-3-3 CBE structure, secondary schools are becoming Senior Schools (Grade 10–12), with Junior School covering Grade 7–9. The old term will fade as the final 8-4-4 cohorts complete — but for now, schools live in both worlds, and your management system should too.
